062 The Sun Also Rises
by Ernest Hemingway
Dive into Ernest Hemingway’s acclaimed masterpiece, *The Sun Also Rises*, a novel so profoundly impactful it holds the number sixty-two spot on our “100 books to read before you die” list, and boasts a commendable reader rating of 3.79 out of 5. This quintessential tale of the Lost Generation captures the raw disillusionment and profound angst of a world forever reshaped by the Great War. Hemingway’s signature spare yet powerful style perfectly frames a poignant look at lives adrift, grappling with moral bankruptcy and spiritual dissolution.
First published in 1926, this landmark novel introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: the steadfast Jake Barnes and the magnetic, flamboyant Lady Brett Ashley. Their compelling story unfolds from the glittering, wild nightlife of 1920s Paris, through a haze of cocktails and emotional entanglement, to the brutal, sun-drenched bullfighting rings of Spain. Surrounded by a motley group of fellow expatriates, they navigate a landscape defined by unrealized love, vanishing illusions, and the desperate search for meaning in a world that seems to have lost its way. It is an age of unfulfilled desires and profound spiritual dissolution.
More than just a narrative of post-war ennui, *The Sun Also Rises* established Hemingway as one of the twentieth century’s greatest literary voices. It masterfully explores universal themes of love, masculinity, and the search for purpose in a fractured world. Its raw honesty and groundbreaking style not only defined an era but continue to resonate, inviting readers to confront the complexities of human existence and the enduring quest for authenticity amidst the ruins of idealism. This timeless work remains a vital touchstone for understanding both history and the human heart.

Surprisingly, this was basically the first book that broke my wall of SciFi and Fantasy. I wanted th broaden my horizons, and figured I’d try my mind on one of the so-called greats and find out what it is all about. While I did not mind listening to the book, it seemed to drag on longer than needed. It is probably because it is a completely different pace than what I am used to. Coming from DND, Cradle, Star Wars and the like to a book such as this is quite a big step. Hemmingway takes his time filling in the details of every aspect, rather than having the reader fill in the blanks.
