012 Animal Farm
by George Orwell, Russell Baker (Preface), C.M. Woodhouse (Introduction)
Step onto Manor Farm, a place where the overworked and mistreated animals finally rise up against their human oppressors. Driven by a fervent idealism and rallying behind stirring slogans, they embark on a daring revolution, determined to forge a new society built on progress, justice, and absolute equality. This audacious vision has captivated readers for decades, earning George Orwell’s *Animal Farm* an impressive 4.01 out of 5 stars from countless listeners, and securing its place as number twelve on our essential ‘100 books to read before you die’ list. What unfolds next is one of the most brilliant satiric fables ever penned.
It’s a razor-edged fairy tale designed for grown-ups that charts the chilling evolution from revolutionary fervor against tyranny straight into a totalitarian regime just as brutal, if not more so. Though initially published as a piercing critique of Stalinist Russia, the devastating clarity of Orwell’s masterpiece reveals its universal truth today: wherever and whenever freedom is threatened, under any guise, *Animal Farm*’s savage comedy and profound message remain ferociously fresh and urgently relevant. It serves as a timeless mirror to the darkest aspects of power and manipulation.
This isn’t just a story; it’s a stark, compelling allegory that dissects the psychology of oppression, the seduction of power, and the terrifying ease with which noble ideals can be corrupted. *Animal Farm* is an indispensable read because it offers profound insights into political cycles and human nature, even through the lens of barnyard animals. It serves as a potent warning, reminding us to question authority, to be vigilant against propaganda, and to safeguard the principles of true freedom and equality. Its enduring power to provoke thought and spark vital conversations makes it an absolute must-experience for every thoughtful individual.

A lot of dystopian books on this list and many others like it. It makes you wonder why, with so many people being aware of the stories told in these books, history seems to repeat itself. The book is amazing. What seemingly starts as a run of the mill childrens book, it quickly turns into something considerably deeper in nature. The book, clearly written during WW2 hits so many notes of that time as well as times after. It kept delivering hit after hit to my head with how relevant this book is in current times. A massive yes for being on this list, if only to bring attention to current world affairs.
